Open architecture recognition system

September 2001 Access Control & Identity Management

For many years the price of facial recognition software was high. Now, FaceVACS available from Modular Communications is offering a cost-effective biometric solution.

FaceVACS has an open architecture design where integration to other access control systems can be accommodated via a TCP/IP protocol where 'hooks' and 'sockets' are used to transfer messages between different software packages.

Over the past few years FaceVACS has been further refined enabling the use of cheaper colour and monochrome cameras and the cost of the software itself has reduced. FaceVACS solutions can now be price competitive with hand geometry systems and more sophisticated fingerprint readers and supporting software.

According to Modular MD, Cliff Rose FaceVACS give the value added advantages no other biometric system offers. "FaceVACS is reliable and does work, we measured and tested it and we are happy that the results we brag about are achievable and dependable." To prove his point, Rose explained that the company was recently awarded the contract to supply facial recognition for a South African Breweries site with a workforce of about 350 people.

"FaceVACS was successfully integrated with a System 42 access control system, which was installed at Corning Products, in Port Elizabeth last November. The system serves to verify people clocking in and out of work at the time and attendance point in the factory.

"The system has eliminated any clocking fraud and has been functional and reliable since installation. The system performance is routinely audited by checking each and every transaction to establish its correctness. This information is also analysed in Germany to further improve system logarithms and processes. The time clockings are exported to Time Wizard Time and Attendance software, which accommodates Corning's shift schedules and provides a useful HR tool in determining wages," states Rose.

FaceVACS is available as a software package to other access control vendors who wish to integrate this product with their own. For System 42 users the system is available through a service provider or directly from Modular Communications. Other compatible access control systems include Siemens K24.
