Highest resolution for fine jewellery

May 2013 Surveillance, Retail (Industry)

For well over 100 years, the court jeweller Mühlbacher has been the most prestigious address when it comes to sophisticated timepieces and top-class jewellery. Now the showrooms are also shining in new splendour: surrounded by a sleek and elegant interior, customers can relax in a lounge area, and separate sitting areas enable discreet sales discussions with customers.

Within the space of only six months instead of the originally planned 14, Mühlbacher quadrupled their business floor space. Now, the products of renowned manufacturers of timepieces such as Bulgari or Breitling as well as the luxury brand Rolex can be presented in a manner worthy of their names on a spacious 400 square metre display area. In addition, treasures by Cartier or Chopard, among others, are offered together with original jewellery creations from the in-house master workshop.

However, the brothers Andreas and Markus Mühlbacher, who now run this family business in the fourth generation, set the highest quality as their standard not only for timepieces and jewellery. They also demanded the highest possible performance of the video surveillance system, which was completely renewed during the remodelling and expansion.

“The cameras are supposed to blend in discreetly with our showroom concept,” Andreas Mühlbacher emphasises. “At the same time, naturally the video system must be reliable at all times. That is why we decided on Dallmeier.” Markus Mühlbacher adds: “What is more, it is important for us to work together with local companies. And with Dallmeier our contact partner is always close at hand.”

Video technology for customer care

More than 20 HD cameras keep an eye on everything: the entrance and sales areas, lounge and cashier’s counter, consulting area and packaging station, manager’s office and workshop, and also the surrounding streets and inner courtyard. At the same time, the video equipment not only provides protection from theft and break-ins: One of the main reasons for the video system was to optimise customer care. That is why a computer with a monitor can be found at strategic points such as the reception area, cashier’s counter, office or workshop, on which the images made by the surveillance cameras are shown in a window with six splits.

“Our rooms are very expansive, for which reason it is not possible to keep an eye on the entire shop at once. But with the video images our employees immediately see where the customers are. This means that our customers do not have to wait long for assistance and they feel that they are being treated in the best possible way,” explains Andreas Mühlbacher.

The cameras are vandal-resistant dome cameras delivering detailed, colour-true image material. In addition, the image quality can be optimised with numerous control functions such as AWB, AGC and Slow Shutter.

The images are stored on a DMS 2400, a high-performance video appliance. The recording is controlled by motion, ie, recordings are only made when there is actual movement within the image. This enables efficient use of the storage capacity of the hard drives.

The Mühlbachers have continuous remote access to live and recorded image material through an iPhone server: “The Dallmeier iPhone app is really very practical and easy to operate. This lets me keep an eye on things at all times, even when I am away,” says Markus Mühlbacher.
