Teaching businesses to know their money

July 2012 News & Events

Every business that handles cash faces the risk of receiving counterfeit notes. The cash industry and businesses continue to lose millions of rand in counterfeit notes on an annual basis. The onus is on businesses to train employees who handle cash to be vigilant in identifying fake notes.

In an effort to educate the industry, SBV Services have introduced a new training programme focusing on counterfeit training; that is tailor-made for tellers in the banking environment as well as general individuals that deal with cash. The service extension is as a result of SBV’s extensive experience in cash handling and in dealing with large volumes of cash.

The programme has been introduced with a number of objectives in mind, such as educating individuals about the importance of becoming compliant and competent in identifying and reporting counterfeit money, to ensure that employees understand key cash handling concepts and the legislation that controls the counterfeit money obligations.

SBV’s Grant Dunnington added, “This course has been compiled in accordance with the South African Reserve Bank standards with the aim of assisting businesses to minimise the unrecoverable losses associated with counterfeit money. We are pleased to have undertaken this programme and are looking forward to broadly implementing it nationally as an educational initiative.”
