School billing and attendance

June 2012 Access Control & Identity Management, Education (Industry)

A number of schools across the Netherlands and Belgium are implementing i-School in conjunction with i-Scan, an online billing and attendance system developed by Info Service Belgium NV.

i-School is a user-friendly Internet application that is accessible from any workstation (PC, portable, i-Phone, etc.) equipped with a browser and Internet connection. This eliminates the need for time-consuming local installations, messy upgrades and above all, there is no need for backups. Both the application and the user’s data is hosted by one of the most secure data centres in Belgium, Belgacom NetCenter in Evere.

In short, parents receive a login and password for the Website where they can register their children for activities such as swimming, sports days, lunch at school, etc. The school secretary also has a login and can add items to students or classes, for example an excursion that has to be paid by the parents, books or extramural activities.

At the end of the month the secretary of the school simply pushes a button, instantly compiling an invoice for every child.

The i-Scan module, which makes use of Suprema’s SupreMOBILE is used to record the attendance of children at various after-school programmes. In Belgium primary school starts a 8.30 am and ends at 15.30 pm. Most parents work from 8 am until 5 pm. So children go to a playground before and after school. Parents have to pay for this pre- and after-school playgroup. The scan logs are imported into i-School, and i-School calculates how much the parents have to pay, which is dependant on the time the child spent at the playgroup and is usually calculated per quarter hour and then added to the school bill, together with the other costs to be.
