His Excellency Ambassador of Belgium, Luc Teirlinck, officially pressed the button to start local factory production at the Bekaert subsidiary, Bekaert Bastion Fencing Systems in May. After months of construction and installation of highly specified machinery, the new R15m Bekaert Bastion operation will now produce high security fencing in the Western Cape. The principal effects of local production will be local job creation, improved service to the business community and increased opportunities for developing the South African market as well as export markets throughout Africa.
At an event marking the factory launch, Ambassador Teirlinck said: "Bekaert is a company with which I am familiar - after all, Bekaert is a household name in Belgium and I am sure it will, in time, be one here too.
Bekaert is a technology-driven group pioneering steel and metal transformation and coating technologies. With an annual turnover of R19 bn, the Bekaert group is a leading independent manufacturer of steel wire products. Its headquarters are in Belgium and the group employs over 17 000 people in 80 manufacturing operations throughout the world.
Managing Director of the local joint venture company, Michael Rodenburg, explains: "Our factory revolves around the newly installed machine which is the first of its kind and the only machine in Africa that can produce maximum high security fencing products to Bekaert's advanced specifications."
