Establishing a good lockout/tagout program requires three basic steps:

* Developing a written program that involves identifying and writing procedures for the control of hazardous energy. This includes preparation for shutdown, equipment isolation, lockout/tagout application, release of stored energy and verification of energy isolation to each piece of equipment.

* Both affected and authorised employees must be trained in the specific energy control procedures as established by the company.

The range of Lockout devices for mechanical risk applications includes those for ball, gate, and butterfly valves in any or all positions; cables, cylinders and pneumatics.
