Security professionals warned: get up to speed with IP or be left behind

April 2012 Infrastructure

Security professionals without a working knowledge of IP-based systems and products are at risk of being left behind in the rapidly evolving security marketplace.

That is the message from the organisers of IFSEC International 2012, who are hosting an extensive IP education awareness programme at this year’s show in order to help visitors safeguard their future business.

IFSEC International event director Charlie Cracknell said: “It is crucial that both security installers and end-users are as familiar with IP and networked security technologies as possible. We have seen reports suggesting that the US security market has already reached its tipping point in terms of greater numbers of IP security products being sold than analogue, and while there is definitely still a place for analogue in legacy systems, the future is, inevitably, on the network.

“So to help safeguard the businesses of IFSEC International visitors, and in conjunction with our exhibitors, we have put together a comprehensive education programme with an emphasis on IP and integration skills and knowledge. It makes IFSEC International 2012 the most important destination for discussion and debate on the future of electronic security.”

As part of this IP education drive, IFSEC International 2012 will see the debut of the ipAssured Education Zone, presented by Anixter and show organiser UBM. The ipAssured Education Zone is an exclusive area where a team of experts will offer presentations on leading industry trends.

Based on results from testing conducted in Anixter’s Infrastructure Solutions Lab, the ipAssured Education Zone programme will demonstrate an open migration path from analogue to IP that is both scalable and interoperable.

For installers and integrators, the sessions will focus on the potential of IP for their businesses, and the tools required to achieve that potential. These include maintaining market knowledge, image quality, interoperability, standards, preconfigured product solutions and continued education.

For end-users, business drivers and trends towards the convergence of physical and IT security will be examined, including looking at compliance with regulations and standards, and return on investment and implementation efficiency. There will also be sessions dedicated to plotting the most successful migration from an analogue to IP system.

At this year’s event, Anixter will also announce the latest version of the programme that applies the same technology-driven, standards-based and best-practise approach to video surveillance.  Anixter’s programme, ipAssured Defining Network Video Migration, supports current and future video surveillance applications, pairing technology to establish the best migration strategy.

At this year’s show, Norbain, one of the industry’s largest distributors will be talking with visitors about system design for IP and integrated network security systems. The focus will be on how to design a complete system across multiple brands and solutions rather than on individual pieces of kit.

In the Tavcom Training Theatre, a dedicated IP session will look at the current state of play with IP, its future, and the implication of the move from IP4 addresses to IPv6.

And at the IFSEC International Centre Stage feature, a session on ‘Convergence and the future of security’ will look at the way organisations are combining physical and logical security, and discuss whether end user purchasers are really buying into the convergence and integration agenda.

A big player in electronic security products in recent years, Samsung is planning to take the fear out of embracing exciting technology changes. Its stand will feature interactive product demonstration areas where visitors will be able to try out the latest IP and network video surveillance and access control technologies.

Honeywell’s ‘Technical Support Clinic’ will also offer advice on IP and integration. This guidance is designed to help installers and end-user companies in their efforts to understand topics including IP migration, integration, and convergence.
