Call to help expand feeding scheme

November 2011 News & Events

‘Our Future – Identity’, a biometric identity solution developed by neaMetrics continues to facilitate the accurate disbursement of food parcels to disadvantaged pupils.

In 2010 neaMetrics, a software solution developer and distributor of Suprema, adopted the Dainfern College’s Itirele-Zenzele Feeding Scheme as part of its social investment initiative for the year. This involved developing a customised biometric identity solution which would aid in the accurate distribution of food parcels to needy children by eliminating duplication, speeding up disbursement and providing accurate reports and disbursement statistics to sponsors.

Cheryl Coetzee, director of pastoral care and outreach at Dainfern College, is pleased to report that they now feed vulnerable children at three different schools. “We feed 150 students at Itirele Zenzele (grades 10-12), they receive a food parcel every second week,” says Cheryl. “In June 2011 we introduced two new schools: 150 children at Reshomile Primary school in Diepsloot (grades 1-7) who receive a food parcel once a month, and nine learners from a new school in Diepsloot called The Leap School (only has 45 grade 9 students) who receive food parcels every second week.”

“We would like to roll the system out at other schools once we receive funding for food parcels at these facilities,” says Coetzee, “as the system provided can easily handle up to 10 000 individuals.” The purpose of this project is to keep scholars, who are also providers for their families, in school. The project is dependent on funding from the Dainfern College community, parents and businesses who pledge to donate an amount each month towards these food parcels.”
