Ecotag now available commercially

July 2001 Asset Management

Trolley Scan has announced in Johannesburg that commercial production has commenced on its EcoTag UHF RFID and already systems have been supplied to users in the USA, Australia and France.

Offering operating ranges as far as 6 m, this low-cost UHF transponder technology uses the EcoTag-patented principle to provide passive transponders that can operate on only 1 mW of RF energy. Produced in volume by PEM of Alberton South Africa, transponders can be ordered in medium scale volumes directly from Trolley Scan.

Potential use of these systems includes library books, pallets, warehousing, bank and postal bags, asset tracking, airline luggage, and vehicle monitoring (access and parking).

An evaluation system has been developed which provides sample tags and a reader, providing all the equipment such that a user can plug the reader into the serial port of a computer and apply mains power to have a fully operational EcoTag scanning system. The evaluation system allows users to fully test the suitability of EcoTag technology for their applications.

Said Mike Marsh, Managing Director of Trolley Scan: "For a long time we have been promising users that UHF transponder technology would revolutionise RFID. Now these promises have become reality and users can order these systems immediately."

Trolley Scan is a South African company that develops, licenses and promotes leading edge UHF transponder technology that can be produced cost-effectively so that it can be a viable barcode replacement technology.
