At the beginning of May 2001, RH Technologies was awarded the CCTV contract at Eskom's Dhuva power station in Witbank. After having considered several digital CCTV systems and after much debate, Eskom opted to use the HDVR system from Digital Surveillance Systems in Johannesburg.
Eskom decided on the HDVR 3000 system for its realtime display of all 16 channels as well as high-speed recording and reliability. Cost was also an important deciding factor. Yossi Danino of DSS suggested using the Panasonic CP460 CCTV cameras as the preferred choice because of the high resolution and picture quality.
RH Technologies was given one week to finish the installation and with the advice of Danino, as well as technical support from Greg Veffer of DSS, there were no hiccups encountered during the installation. The cabling was completed in four days and the cameras were set up on the access points to the power station so that traffic could be monitored to prevent vehicle theft and unauthorised entry. Number-plates can easily be identified as well as car and driver details as well.
Eskom can now use its CCTV surveillance system to its full potential and do not have to go to the machine to be able to view and layback, but rather they can access the machine from any one of its office PCs by way of the remote software which will allow multiple log-ins from remote stations where video footage can be viewed live or past footage can be played back.
The other advantage of the system is that there is no maintenance and tapes do not have to be changed at all because the video is all stored on the HDVR's hard drive.
