In line with other major universities around the world, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has commissioned Sitetech, a Cape Town-based specialist integration company, to install a campus-wide surveillance system to combat crime and protect the students.
Due to the size of the campus, and its geographical location within various municipalities, it was originally envisaged that four separate control rooms be established. However, to ensure a centralised response, this was changed to two control rooms located within the existing campus security facilities. Over 200 fixed and high-speed dome Panasonic cameras are transmitted in realtime, to two control rooms where they are recorded onto Sanyo digital recorders, via Adpro Amux multiplexers.
Sanyo day/night cameras, which can operate at very low lux levels, as well as having certain other features, necessitated the selection of such high quality cameras for this installation. The control rooms have three viewing stations, each with the capacity of 96 cameras being recorded via five cascaded Adpro Amux multiplexers, onto Sanyo digital recorders and viewed on a number of monitors as well as spot monitors. The operators have full control over the high-speed dome units.
A separate review station has also been created where information recorded on the Sanyo digital recorders can be assessed, copied, backed up and printed to hard copy. Pentagon Distribution was selected to supply us with all of the equipment due to its high level of commitment, assistance and service.
In order to facilitate this installation a site- wide fibre-optic backbone was created, involving the installation of over 10 km of underground sleeving and over 30 km of fibre-optic cable.
The surveillance system is augmented by an extensive security fence and access control at all key points.
