Long haul surveillance technology

March 2011 Infrastructure

Cost of ownership has been forced down with two best-of-breed technologies combined for high capacity, dense mesh networks for CCTV, voice and data, as well as high capacity long haul links to reach any destination no matter how remote it is.

Satinlink has added another technology to its already glowing collection, obtaining a distributorship for South Africa and Africa for the Exalt Wireless high capacity long link products.

This forms a state-of-the-art cocktail of best-of-breed technologies, to offer a full turnkey solution for different types of applications. FireTide Mesh Technology HotPort 7000 (300 Mbps) series can offer the client speeds in the range of 250-300 Mbps (400 raw), but is limited in long distance. The reason for this is the fact that mesh is a dense, compact solution to give optimum penetration (much like a cloud) and is not meant for streaming over long distances. The FWB-100 (35 Mbps) or FWB-200 (150 Mbps) Ethernet bridge would be an option but in this instance, we needed a solution that would be dense yet are able to connect remote sites all together.

Exalt offers this solution. We can stream video, voice and data 25 kilometres to 50 kilometres and still maintain 160 Mbps, although this is dependent on the antennas used; the terrain the link is going over, and potential interference. Full analytical support and network design is essential. Exalt offers a high end solution for very long high-speed links with the higher capacity product the GigE5r, that could do 220 mbps and 440 mbps over 25 km without a problem. For 50 km, with large antennas, it can handle 220 Mbps and even 440 Mbps.

Constraints or factors which will enhance/degrade this performance, such as increasing antenna size will increase link availability figures, and also in high interference areas will strengthen the signal for the link. The longest backhaul distance in which Exalt achieve true throughput in excess of 100 Mbps for a single connection is around 85 km.
