ESDA endorses SA security market survey

June 2001 News & Events

ESDA (the Electronic Security Distributor's Association) announced a number of benefits that apply to its members at an ESDA general meeting held at the premises of Panasonic in April.

SA security industry survey

There is a common view in the security market that a survey is needed to find an answer to the frequent question: what is the value of the SA security industry? In the past other surveys have been offered, but they have either been too expensive to obtain or did not cover relevant areas of interest that provided the security industry with information of real substance. Extensive discussion has taken place between the ESDA committee members regarding the methodology required to gain strategically valuable information for the SA security market. Concerns amongst members of the industry regarding a survey were numerous; ie the figures required need to be accurate and realistic; there would need to be total confidentiality between the survey participants and the administering organisation; and there should be no bias in the dissemination of the survey results. Darren Smith, Managing Editor of Hi-Tech Security Systems, presented a proposal to ESDA members to participate in the survey.

There will be two concurrent surveys conducted, viz 'The state of the South African market for security equipment' and 'Marketplace intelligence - an end-user survey'. 'The state of the market survey' will be conducted annually, in sections which will be collated and sold separately. It will be packaged differently for the benefit of the contributors and the noncontributing interested parties.

Confidentiality will be paramount and a substantial discount in the cost of purchasing the survey results will apply to participating ESDA members. The end-user survey will be collated quarterly or bi-annually, concurrent with the industry survey. Its function is to highlight trends that the industry may not be aware of, and specifically gaps in industry product/service offerings.

ESDA will hold a follow-up meeting in Gauteng in June to discuss the survey.
