Mobile CCTV for school buses

June 2009 Surveillance

Getting children to and from school safely is a priority among all school administrators and a major concern of any parent. To this end, a new law in a Middle Eastern country has mandates that all school buses must be equipped with a mobile DVR, and SerVsion’s newest generation mobile CCTV system – the MVG 400 – has already been selected by seven school districts as their preferred solution.

The MVG 400 is a mobile video gateway (DVR + video transmission system) designed for installation on board buses and other vehicles. The MVG supports four channels of professional quality live and recorded video, bi-directional audio (for 2-way communication between drivers and school personnel) and built-in GPS (for remote vehicle tracking of the buses). Optimised for transmitting video over low bandwidth networks, the units utilitise a GSM or CDMA modem to transmit all video, audio and GPS data to school administrators. These administrators can, on demand, use their PC or mobile device (including cellular phones, PDAs and laptops) to open a live video stream of the bus and remotely observe children while in transit.

Alarms can be activated and video can be automatically transmitted to the school’s control centre whenever a sensor connected to the gateway is triggered, or if the driver activates a panic button in an emergency situation. Control room personnel can remotely track the location of the buses using mapping software, and even monitor the speed of each bus to ensure that drivers are observing the city’s speed limit. All video, audio and GPS data can be locally stored on the gateway’s hard drive and wirelessly downloaded to a backup server in the bus yard when the buses are not in operation. The archived video can be reviewed or analysed at a later date, and is especially useful when there are allegations of vandalism, or other types of misconduct by drivers or students.
