Charlotte Maxeke gets a surveillance check-up

May 2009 Surveillance

Charlotte Maxeke General Hospital is a public hospital in Johannesburg, offering a full range of specialised healthcare services with professional physicians and innovative technologies. With more than 1000 beds being served, the hospital serves patients across and around Johannesburg. Ensuring the safety of the staff, patients, visitors and assets therefore is critical for the hospital.

Considering more than 4000 people visit Charlotte Maxeke General Hospital every day, a reliable surveillance platform to tackle against theft and crime, as well as to keep an eye on every corner of the hospital is therefore highly required.

Hikvision was selected to provide its high-performance cameras and technical support to ensure safety of the hospital. In total, 500 cameras including the DS-2CD812P-IR1 IR network camera, DS-2AF1-617 analogue high-speed dome and DS-2CD712PF-E network domes are installed throughout the hospital.

The Hikvision DS-2CD812P-IR1 IR network camera uses H.264 video compression and advanced DSP technology, offering high-definition images with resolution up to 752×582 (480 TVL video output). The camera provides an effective 10-metre coverage with a minimum illumination of 0,1 Lux at F1.2 when the IR LEDs are off and 0 Lux when the IR LEDs are on. The IR LEDs turn on automatically when illumination falls under 4 Lux, which enables the product to provide Charlotte Maxeke with high quality video surveillance 24/7.

The Hikvision DS-2AF1-617 analogue high-speed dome, which adopts 0,25-inch Sony EXVIEW CCD, also plays a big part in safeguarding the hospital. The product supports 480 TVL horizontal resolution, 360° high-speed continuous rotation and auto flip functionality. Furthermore, with backlight compensation and auto/manual shifting (Colour and B/W) on low illumination conditions, analogue dome is capable of providing excellent coverage for the hospital. The product also supports multizone motion detection and sensitive area mask functionality, which met the various security and privacy concerns of Charlotte Maxeke General Hospital.

The DS-2CD712PF-E network dome is being used to cover the main entrance, porch, wards and outpatient clinic. Security staff in the surveillance centre are able to cover every corner of the hospital.

“Thanks to Hikvision’s high quality cameras and professional technical support, crime in the hospital has decreased by 80%,” says Almero Bourbon, manager of the Sizoma Group, responsibility for the supply and installation of the surveillance system.
