R55m urban surveillance project awarded to DNA Sensormatic

March/April 2001 News & Events

The long-awaited contract for the installation and maintenance of an extensive camera network to survey Johannesburg's inner city was recently awarded to DNA Sensormatic. The total contract, awarded by Business Against Crime in collaboration with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, is valued at R55m. DNA Sensormatic was one of four companies shortlisted from 70 who originally expressed interest in the project. The urban surveillance project is set to play a decisive role in the fight to revitalise the city.

The first phase of the project entails adding a further 55 cameras to the city's existing network by the middle of the year, with the total number of cameras reaching 300 when the system is fully operational. This would ultimately make the control centre the most advanced and largest in the world. The rollout across the city centre follows the successful testing of a 15-camera pilot project running since April 2000, similarly put together by DNA Sensormatic.

Other public area surveillance projects managed and implemented by DNA Sensormatic have proved equally successful. These include a 72-camera system covering Cape Town's CBD, as well as a 16-camera system monitoring Vanguard Drive and other approaches to the recently opened Grand West casino, also in Cape Town. Cape Town has seen crime levels reduced by as much as 80%. A pilot system in Sunnyside, Pretoria is also currently being assessed.

John Penberthy, Managing Director of Business Against Crime, says that the Johannesburg installation will be a world-class operation, demanding a high level of specialised technical expertise.

Richard Pople, Chief Executive Officer of DNA Sensormatic, believes that the awarding of the Johannesburg contract firmly positions Sensormatic as the southern African leader in the provision of CCTV systems and services. "DNA Sensormatic's focus is on helping its customers improve their risk management efficiencies and processes. Our expertise in the application of CCTV systems goes well beyond simply installing equipment and control centres. Indeed, for some customers we manage their entire risk management function, providing specialist services, management and operators to complement the technology and communications infrastructure, all built around long-term strategic plans.

"We believe that we can apply our expertise and experience to set a new standard in the effectiveness of urban surveillance in Johannesburg", says Pople.
