Events security

November 2007 News & Events

The South African Qualifications Authority has now registered the Event Security Unit Standard and once the training material has been evaluated and approved of by SASSETA then training presented by accredited SASSETA Training Providers can commence. This should hopefully be by January 2008 in preparation for the 2009 CAF Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. PSIRA will also legislate this training.

The purpose of the Events Security Unit Standard is to enable learners (security officers) to monitor, observe and direct crowds. These learners will be able to respond to the behaviour and direction of persons. Learners will be able to inspect and provide security presence at a venue, monitor crowd size movement, stress, behaviour and safety, react to potential crowd problems and breaches of sporting etiquette, direct crowds at special events, prepare to monitor and respond to unlawful or suspicious incidents.

The unit standard consists of three specific outcomes:

* Perform event security.

* React to incidents and breaches of security.

* Direct crowds at special events.

The unit standard also forms part of the new Close Protection Qualification and the National Certificate in General Security Practices, which is presently under review.
