At its business service centre at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), fire and security company Chubb provides a luggage service that allows passengers to check in their luggage and collect it when boarding their flight.
This allows travellers to do errands in Hong Kong or shop with the knowledge that their baggage is secure. Previously, staff had to mark luggage and store and retrieve baggage manually. This was time-consuming during busy periods.
With the growing popularity of the service, Chubb made a decision to improve the service by speeding up the check-in process by automating the system.
RCG's left luggage control system (LLCS) was implemented as a client-server solution. The server handles all data transactions and uses desktop workstations, handheld terminals and barcode scanners.
Passengers check-in their luggage at the Chubb storage area, and receive a printed receipt. The system automatically assigns a location for the booked-in luggage.
To collect their luggage, passengers present their receipt. The system informs the handler of the location. It then calculates the fee and generates an invoice.
The system has helped Chubb increase the overall efficiency of the service, while providing ad hoc inventory reports and tracking staff shifts.
Overall, the system has improved Chubb's luggage control system by reducing time, cost and human resources while significantly increasing efficiencies.
