Aludi offers hands-free SmartPass

September 99 Asset Management

SmartPass provides a true hands-free system, allowing a wide range of integrated and flexible vehicle control systems. Vehicles are equipped with an encoded identification tag which is read as it approaches the reader. The code is transmitted from the reader as a Weigand signal to a terminal/controller unit programmed to authorise or deny access to the vehicle. It is specifically designed for automatic vehicle access control, car park management and fleet management applications.

SmartPass is ideal for gate control applications where access is monitored remotely and automatically. Vehicle access into a specific zone is controlled without stopping authorised vehicles, 24 hours a day and without the need for human intervention. Identification can be carried out at different locations - security entrance points, refuelling points, loading bays or even when entering cleaning or maintenance zones.

Car park applications ideal

SmartPass is particularly suitable for car park applications which have large numbers of authorised regular users' vehicles, controlling up to 700 vehicles per hour against the more traditional 200 vehicles per hour. It also enables companies managing large fleets of vehicles to automatically detect all tagged vehicle movements in and out of multiple sites. The vehicle identity is checked instantaneously with authorisation codes in the central processing unit database. SmartPass can become the key element in a system to fully optimise a fleet of vehicles.

The SmartPass reader actually reads and identifies tags at about 3 m (can be adapted up to a maximum of 6 m under certain conditions) and at driving speeds of up to 45 km/h, although speed and distance depend on the location. SmartPass combines an antenna, RF module, logic board and power supply in a reliable, compact, weather-resistant enclosure.

The ID tags are enclosed in a factory sealed polyester blend casing which can be mounted on a vehicle using hook and loop tape or high-strength double sided tape (or epoxy resin for a more permanent fixture). There are two types of tags available for locating inside or outside the vehicle. Each tag is energised by a small lithium battery cell which has a life of approximately 5 years and continuous life. Battery life is unaffected by the number of reads or by RF fields from other sources.

Robust and effective

SmartPass is capable of operating in any environmental conditions, including dust, grease or humidity without loss of detection and monitoring efficiency. The system operates in the 2400 to 2500 MHz frequency bands. The reader enclosure is durable polycarbonate radome, factory scaled to a coated aluminium back and is rated at IP64. AT5103 tags should be placed inside the vehicle on a nonmetallic surface. AT5105 tags are weather-resistant and may be mounted on exterior metallic surfaces.

Readers connect through a Cardkey Dual reader module 4420 to a modular controller CK-4101-2 into a Pegasys 900 modular integrated security system.

Recognition Systems Biometric hand readers ID3D or HK2 can also be incorporated via Cardkey Dual Reader Modules 4420 into the Pegasys 900 system to confirm driver identify.
