Access control or T&A in the palm of your hand

May 2006 Access Control & Identity Management

Biometric identification is the automatic assessment of a unique body feature. Biometric systems are superior because they provide a non-transferable means of identifying people over card or badge-based systems.

The IR Recognition Systems HandPunch, imported, distributed and supported by Uniclox, uses the uniqueness of three dimensional hand geometry to positively identify, and verify an employee by the size and shape of their hand. Results of independent field tests conducted in the USA shows that the HandPunch has the best overall performance and user acceptance of any biometric device incorporated into an access control or time and attendance system.

Each time an employee uses the device, a 3D picture of the hand is acquired, 31 000 points are analysed and over 90 distinct measurements are made which verifies the employee's identity in less than one second. No fingerprints or palm prints are utilised. The low reject rate is the key to clocking authorised workers quickly. The HandPunch clearly notifies each user of a match by displaying a red or green indicator light.

No cards or badges are needed to use the HandPunch reader. The employee's hand is his or her card and cannot be lost or forgotten, which reduces administration procedures and in addition you never pay for replacement cards again. The HandPunch is a fully featured time clock complete with operational battery backup and gives additional savings by eliminating time theft, buddy clocking, ghost employees and fraud. Uniclox now brings the accuracy and convenience of biometric technology easily within reach of most time and attendance or access control applications transmitting the data to the host PC through a variety of methods including standard RS232/RS422/RS485 or Ethernet communications to remote sites using battery power and GSM cellphone technology for communicating with head office computer systems.

Uniclox software solutions are fully Windows-based, user friendly, easily installed, set up and operated. There are single-user or multi-user versions with various password level controls to provide complete solutions for small to large organisations. The software packages interface to the most widely used payroll systems, which in turn ensure seamless and accurate payrolls.
