AMS security division premieres biometric access control booth.

August '99 Access Control & Identity Management

The first demonstration by the security division of Analysis, Management & Systems (AMS) of its newly developed biometric access control booth took place recently.

"The product is based on our Manual Access 1100 or fully automatic Prestige Sun Access booths and incorporates a fingerprint reader to provide an extremely high level of security," said AMS Product Specialist Adrian Hofmeyr.

"Not only do individuals have to identify themselves with an access card to gain access to sensitive areas but they have to confirm their identities with their fingerprints. An additional measure of security is provided by the fact that the system can distinguish between a live and a severed finger."

The system was developed in response to a request from a major bank for a maximum security access control solution to protect the most sensitive parts of their operation. It also incorporates a metal detector and other sensors, such as weight floors and volumetric testing, to register attempts to leave foreign objects in the access booth.

The system is controlled by a PC and users can be enrolled quickly and easily by having their fingerprints scanned and stored for later comparison. Users can be assigned unlimited access to the area or only during specific times and a detailed log of entries and exits is kept for later examination if required.

Hotel industry embraces biometrics

Another major system based on biometric identification was developed recently for the hotel industry to replace keys and access cards. The system allows guests to pay their bills at hotel bars and restaurants and to access their rooms just by touching a fingerprint reader. "Biometric identification systems provide a high degree of security and can be used anywhere where there is a need to protect an area or a resource," said Hofmeyr. "We can even provide biometric systems that restrict access to a single PC or multiple machines."

Another product launched recently is a fully automated revolving door which cuts heating and cooling costs by preventing the free flow of air to the exterior. The units have three modes: continuous rotation; rotation on entry; and access control when linked to a security system.
