Licence-free two-way radios

September 2005 Infrastructure

Large public events present a unique challenge when it comes to maintaining effective security standards, especially when public figures or a head of state will be present. Security becomes even more critical when such events are hosted in stadia or large auditorium environments with multiple entrances.

Key to maintaining public safety and security, as well as crowd control under such potentially unstable conditions, is a reliable means of communication. High-quality two-way radio systems have proven very effective for this application, yet for many years the initial capital layout costs of this technology posed a significant obstacle, especially for emerging security service providers.

Given the fact that public events are often once-off or annual occurrences that vary from a single day to a few weeks in duration, it is often not financially beneficial for contract security service providers to purchase a large number of two-way radios for a single contract job.

Yet, having an insufficient number of mobile two-way radio units results in a lower level of security, with significantly larger chances of security breaches or crowds getting out of hand. It also makes it very difficult to communicate contingency plans to security officials in case of an emergency or escalating crowd situation.

Large public events can be very noisy affairs and the use of radios equipped with earpieces or headsets serve to prevent miscommunications and the erroneous execution of security or evacuation instructions, making them an invaluable addition to standard two-way radios used for public events security applications.

International two-way radio company HYT, based in China, offers this section of the security market a range of quality, durable and competitively priced two-way radios. Additionally, the introduction of HYT's licence-free TC1688 CRS has gone a long way towards drastically reducing the high business start-up costs associated with conventional licensed two-way radios.

Spectrum Communications is the sole distributor of HYT products for southern Africa.
