Zoning in on mall security

December 2000 Surveillance

The Zone @ Rosebank is an ambitious entertainment and retail project aimed at restoring Rosebank's image as one of the trendy nightspots to visit. Mark Souris, Centre General Manager for The Zone @ Rosebank explains that creating a safe environment was of paramount importance. "We plan to attract the 18-35 age group in the upper income bracket as well as foreign tourists. With an installation value of R2,4m in safety equipment, The Zone @ Rosebank is without a doubt one of the safest entertainment/shopping areas in the country."

AFS Systems supplied and installed a full Panasonic WJ-SX550 matrix security system for the building's upgrade project to monitor a 27 000 m2 area. The fact that The Zone @ Rosebank has a great deal of pedestrian traffic and is surrounded by a common area meant that the security system had to be very advanced.

"Our company prefers to provide reputable products and Panasonic offers the combination of being a top international brand as well as being highly cost-effective. The systems are easily installed and have high specifications," says AFS Systems' Technical Manager, Steve Kobrin. "We decided to install a total solution since mixing and matching products requires the installation of interfacings, thereby increasing the risk ratio. Maintenance on one system is also much easier and if anything goes wrong one can go straight to the supplier for direct solutions," explains Kobrin.

The managing of the system on a day-to-day basis has been outsourced to Anchor Security. Errol Goldstone, Operations Director of Anchor Security is impressed with the system. "The products are user-friendly and Panasonic has provided our team with training on all the products and their various capabilities. The system has definitely shortened the response times of our guards," enthuses Goldstone.
