Protect against computer and component theft

August 2004 Information Security

According to KPMG's Information Security Survey, over 60% of local companies have experienced theft of IT equipment in the past year. PC Protector offers an effective way of curbing the losses incurred by the theft of computers, their components and most of all, valuable data.

The PC Protector is easily installed in any open expansion card slot in most personal computers; it does not plug into the computer motherboard and operates totally independent from the computer.

Once armed with the security-coded key, PC Protector will sound the 120 dB alarm inside the computer if the unit is moved or its casing opened.

PC Protector can be utilised in one of two ways, according to the user's requirements. If linked to the power supply of a PC, the motion sensor only will be de-activated when the PC is turned on to avoid the possibility of false alarms should the unit be moved during this time. When the PC is switched off, the PC Protector automatically arms against unauthorised movement.

Alternatively, the PC Protector can remain armed all the time - in either case, if the PC is moved when armed, a short alarm signal sounds to warn the perpetrator to desist. If this warning is ignored, a high-pitched alarm will go off inside the computer.

Whether the computer is on or off, a light sensor will detect any attempt to open the casing and PC Protector will sound the alarm immediately if the casing is opened. There is no warning signal. The alarm is designed to deter component thieves and protect PC Protector against tampering.

Both the motion and light sensors are adjustable to suit the individual working environment.

The PC Protector also has an option to be linked via a transmitter to an existing home or office alarm system. If tampering occurs, a panic signal is sent instantly to the alarm alerting the security company of the breach.
