Tracking and protecting patients in realtime

August 2004 Access Control & Identity Management, Products & Solutions

Late in April, two newborn babies were inadvertently swapped in a hospital and sent home with the wrong parents. A week later they were returned to the correct homes. This tragedy may be the result of any combination of factors but the reality is that it should never and need never have happened.

Hi-Bryd Solutions has various solutions for this and various other types of security-related incidents that can occur in hospitals. At critical times, doctors, orderlies and nurses need to be found immediately, life-saving equipment needs to be located and secured within the premises and patients (including newborn babies, Alzheimer's victims and psychiatric care residents) need additional protection measures.

Eiris Smart Hospital offers all these solutions through intelligent applications tailored to suit the unique needs of healthcare environments. With Eiris tags, mobile assets can be located instantly, doctors and nurses can be found without delay and patients in distress can alert nurses even when they are away from their bed. Since patient and personnel safety is of primary concern, Visonic Technologies has also developed innovative and simple-to-install security solutions to ensure their protection. Both of these solutions implement IRFID Triple Technology.

IRFID triple technology combines IR (infrared), RF (UHF), and LF (Magnetic) technologies to provide a scalable, powerful and cost effective local positioning system, which is the basis for the Eiris Smart Hospital.

Eiris Healthcare solutions comprises ceiling-mounted network readers (RDRs), personnel badges, patient wristbands and equipment badges, which transmit eye-safe infrared (IR) signals. These signals, which do not interfere with other healthcare equipment, are received and processed by the readers and then transmitted over the network to an NT server.

The user-friendly Eiris Software allows the operator to observe information in realtime from any networked computer. The result is that the nearest wheelchair, a sought after patient or emergency room staff can be identified and located in realtime through a database, or a map view with graphic icons representing people and equipment. Patients, personnel or equipment movements can also be tracked through a historical audit trail.

Eiris badges are also equipped with a reverse side pushbutton to set off alert signals. For example, when a patient is seeking help or when a staff member faces a security threat the button can be pushed, instantly alerting the operator who then co-ordinates the appropriate response. Alert signals can be also activated when patients are about to enter dangerous zones or equipment is moved to unauthorised zones or about to leave the premises.

The Eiris Emergency Management System eliminates unnecessary urgency and uncertainty created within the emergency room by creating an intelligent emergency room that determines where the patient is, which staff can be located in what department and where emergency equipment can be found immediately.

Eiris Assisted Living complements old age homes through the implementation of smart, user-friendly applications designed to enhance patients' standard of living while reducing patient risk.

Eiris Asset Management is an innovative solution for asset tracking, asset security and inventory control that introduces new levels of cost effectiveness and efficiency to healthcare management.

Eiris Patient Alert set out to boost patient care through intuitive add-on patient-nurse communication systems that enable patients to call for aid even when away from their bed.
