Beget launches wireless GPRS-based biometrics fingerprint solution

August 2004 Access Control & Identity Management, Security Services & Risk Management

Beget Holdings has launched MobileBio, the first mobile biometrics fingerprint system with realtime access control via general packet radio switching (GPRS). The solution, which uses Sony fingerprint identification technology, requires no swipe cards, cables, scanners, software or supporting computer hardware, reducing IT investment costs and eliminating complex installations.

MobileBio can be used only as a time and attendance record or as an access control device as well by simply plugging in the appropriate module.

Security access and time and attendance systems generally make use of magnetic cards, identification numbers or proximity cards to activate the system. Employees can easily enter and access these systems with someone else's identity or card because of the systems inability to detect these false acceptances, known as 'buddy clocking', which can result in frequent security breaches, ghost employees and inaccurate time and attendance records.

Beget product manager, Antoinette Weideman, says MobileBio eliminates these concerns as it confirms the identity of individuals by electronically capturing their fingerprints via the Sony biometrics device and also transmitting this time and attendance data to a secure central server for confirmation by means of cellular technology. "We opted to use the Sony FIU-300 Puppy fingerprint device because of its accuracy and speed, small footprint, robust design and affordability. All scanning is handled by the unit itself, minimising the impact on existing systems."

A client's ability to set up business rules on this database, using a standard Web interface, allows for full reporting on all attendance exceptions and rules. Users can add and edit rules in realtime via SMS and/or e-mail.

Being mobile, remote and completely wireless, MobileBio can be used as the complete solution, whether out in the field, on rugged construction sites or simply as an attendance register on the reception desk in the office. The system can also easily be interfaced with existing payroll software.

MobileBio is equipped with a built-in battery backup power supply, and a 12 V power supply adaptor is available. Users can also subscribe to receive location information so every time the system is used it will record the location. Beget plans to market this product internationally and has already negotiated distributorship in parts of Europe, Africa and Australasia.
