The camera with a difference

July 2004 Surveillance

Vision Catcher introduces a new approach to retail monitoring covering large areas without using an array of cameras. Conventional CCTV cameras with pan and zoom lenses are well-suited for fully-manned operations, but fall short when manpower is limited.

SentryScope has been designed for this need, providing an effective solution for unmanned and partially-manned surveillance.

"SentryScope is a true breakthrough in security video," says Vision Catcher managing director Niall Beazley. "Conventional CCTV provides only about 80 000 to 300 000 pixels per image, far too few to identify faces, read licence plates and detect suspicious activities. Revolutionary new technology allows SentryScope to provide up to 21 million pixels per image, 250 times greater than conventional CCTV cameras." This ultra-high resolution allows SentryScope to monitor large regions, more than 80 m wide, while simultaneously capturing quality images of small areas. Unlike manually repositioned pan and zoom cameras, SentryScope records the entire monitored area in ultra-high resolution.

This is critically important in unmanned operations where crimes and other activities are not reported for minutes or days after the fact. SentryScope continuously records the full field-of-view in high detail, allowing a later review of any sub region at any point in time. Video surveillance in partially-manned operations is just as important. Security personnel are on-site, but their other duties take away their attention from the video monitors. Pan and zoom cameras provide nothing if the operator is not aware of the problem as it occurs. When an operator misses an event, so does the pan and zoom camera. SentryScope allows security personnel in partially-manned operations to operate at their maximum effectiveness. The extra wide field-of-view reduces the number of individual monitors that must be viewed, and the quick review capabilities allow a better understanding of realtime events.
