CSIR Defence Technology (Defencetek) has developed a network Internet Protocol (IP) camera for remote observation from a desktop computer.
The camera can stream images with sound at 16 frames/sec to a computer. The network camera follows the trend of linking digital security cameras to computer networks. The advantages of the network camera's fully digital image capturing and processing capability outweighs what analog cameras have traditionally offered. This includes, among others, installation, multimedia capability, incident detection and image storage.
The network camera is now available to commercial value adders who want to add software to suit a particular application. The network camera is 125 mm x 125 mm in size and has its own processor and power regulation. Other hardware includes an image sensor, memory, realtime clock, Ethernet and serial ports. The network camera can stream VGA video at 16 frames per second, consuming only 4 W. In addition, it can store image frames for 30 seconds at 16 frames per second. It runs on a Linux kernel.
The Defencetek network camera can be used by application developers as a building block, bringing solutions within their reach in terms of cost and time. Such applications may include video incident detection, a cellphone interface, verification from video or wireless transmission.
With regard to price, the network camera compares well with its imported counterparts. Being a South African development, the camera allows value adders to gain full ownership of the solutions they offer.
