Optron takes quality seriously

February 2004 News & Events

Optron, specialist in geo-positioning and wireless communication, has formalised its commitment to customers by achieving compliance to quality management standard ISO 9001:2000. Says managing director Trevor Venter, "We took the decision to implement the ISO 9001:2000 quality management system to ensure that customers get what they want, first time every time. We are confident that it will assist us in improving our efficiency and our service."

The certification was awarded by Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI), one of the world's top certification bodies. According to William Kennedy, South African-based BVQI lead auditor, Optron was one of his easier assessments. "We saw what we expected to see at Optron," says Kennedy. "This was a fluent exercise and I think the main reason for this is that it had management buy-in and staff acceptance.

"Of course the challenge is to get the quality management system working for both the company and its customers. That is where the constant review and improvement comes in. Like any management system, it takes time to bear fruit both internally and externally."

Optron aims to maintain its ISO 9001:2000 certification through training to develop a quality mindset throughout the company and enhance efficiencies. ISO consultant, ProQual Services, assisted Optron with internal auditing prior to the certification and will continue with ongoing training.
