Three-in-one fleet productivity management solution

November 2000 Asset Management

Bandit Intersat is the first satellite-based fleet productivity management system in the country designed to provide fleet managers with a complete asset control solution. The three-in-one system comprises GPS technology for efficient fleet management, an onboard computer to monitor green band driving and a built-in stolen vehicle recovery system.

Designed to meet the specialised requirements of South African clients, Intersat is the result of an intensive joint development project with Denel, who initially partnered Bandit to develop the company's hi-tech Intertrac stolen vehicle recovery system.

"Today vehicle security is paramount," said Allon Raiz, Bandit's Marketing Director. "While fleet owners invest substantial amounts to maximise productivity and control, the other side of the coin is recovery. If a vehicle is stolen or hijacked, it must be recovered, with minimal time delay."

The Intersat system accesses GPS technology to enable clients to receive crucial trip data. Typical information includes vehicle speeds and speed limit violations, mileage monitoring and the logging of visits to unscheduled locations. Each time a driver turns on the ignition, unhitches a trailer or engages 4x4, the data is logged for record purposes.

Should a vehicle be driven into a predefined no-go zone, such as within 10 km of a national border post, the system will immediately alert the fleet manager. If a vehicle is involved in an accident, valuable data can be extracted from the reports.

Information such as the vehicle's GPS coordinates and direction, which the fleet manager can track on his computer monitor, is relayed mainly via the inexpensive Short Message Service (SMS) over the GSM network. When a vehicle is stolen or hijacked, or high priority rules are broken, the system can switch immediately to transmit 'live' data.

The onboard computer enables the fleet manager to monitor green band driving, which includes over-revving, speeding, excessive idling and harsh braking. It can also eliminate unauthorised use of vehicles.

The built-in stolen vehicle recovery system enables Bandit to track and recover stolen or hijacked vehicles. One of only four stolen vehicle recovery systems approved by VESA, the Vehicle Security Association of South Africa, the Intertrac system uses two track and recovery technologies simultaneously to overcome the 'dead' areas present in all communication networks countrywide.
