Local seal manufacturer, Aluvin Securiseal is supplying the City Deep Inland Terminal of Spoornet with security seals for all its Spoornet containers.

According to Matthews Moloi, container terminals manager at City Deep, security sealing is a vital part in the system at this 'dry harbour'. "The City Deep Terminal is the largest inland terminal in the world and we handle more than 500 containers, gate-in gate-out, per day which means more than 2000 actual transactions. You can imagine the importance of security in these conditions as containers come from all over the country and are exported to every part of the globe," said Moloi.

The Aluvin Cargogrip seal is used on all the Spoornet inland containers. "Currently we attach an Aluvin seal to the actual order which accompanies the empty container to be loaded. When the client loads the container he personally attaches the seal. On collection, the driver checks the seal and the documents. The second check takes place when the container arrives at our City Deep Terminal gate and we even have a third check when the container is loaded onto a rail wagon by the cargo coordinator. At the required destination, of course, the process is repeated - in reverse - and the container and seal will be finally checked by the client who ensures that the seal has the same number as is reflected on the paperwork and has not been tampered with in any way," explains Moloi.

Chris Calitz, Spoornet's head office buyer, says that the Aluvin Cargogrip seal is one of the best seals he has worked with. "Since using this seal, theft and pilfering have been significantly reduced. It would be advantageous if other carriers would use seals of this nature as it would reduce problems that we have with their containers in the same way as it has reduced problems with our own," says Calitz.

"Not only is the seal very tough - it can only be opened with a bolt cutter - but the service and tracing and tracking system that Aluvin has given us have made a significant difference. We have worked together for many years and from time to time they have added features to the seal in response to our needs. And, most importantly, the seal is cost effective. With security sealing one has to balance the overall effectiveness of the seal with its cost," he added.

Calitz added that one of the important aspects of the success of their relationship with Aluvin is the complete trust and co-operation that exists between the two companies, along with their mutual striving for continuous improvement.
