Sensormatic announces Smart EAS

November 2003 Asset Management, Residential Estate (Industry)

Linking anti-theft systems with IT networks provides retailers with realtime intelligence to improve loss prevention, operational performance and profitability. Sensormatic, a business unit of Tyco Fire & Security, has introduced its Smart EAS product line. Smart EAS is an end-to-end solution that transforms electronic article surveillance (EAS) from an effective theft prevention tool into a multifaceted, realtime intelligence system that will improve loss prevention programs, operations and profitability.

Smart EAS products integrate a retailer's EAS systems with its IT network, cost-effectively creating a powerful information gateway. With Smart EAS, anti-theft alarm data collection is automated for easy analysis to better pinpoint problems and trends.

"Corrective action can be taken early, when it matters most, because managers have up-to-the minute intelligence, remotely accessible at the store, district and corporate levels," said Jamie Rosand, vice president of commercial sales and marketing for Sensormatic. "Users also gain better predictive loss prevention capabilities."

Smart EAS broadens the role of anti-theft systems in four key areas: alarm management, remote system diagnostics, data mining and people counting, added Rosand. Smart EAS tools can provide benefits including:

* Elimination of manual alarm logs for more accurate, timely and complete information.

* Greater EAS control to reduce external and internal theft.

* Quick identification of training needs and policy infractions.

* Centralised data mining to address operational issues and measure EAS effectiveness across an entire retail chain on an exception basis.

* Integration of loss prevention technologies, such as visual monitoring of alarms by linking EAS to digital video.

* Notification of system failure and automated service calls, reducing maintenance costs.

* Customer census to improve conversion rate and verify adequate security is in place.

A number of integrated Smart EAS products are available and also in development, Rosand said. "EAS will continue to evolve well beyond traditional theft prevention to have a broader impact on operations," concluded Rosand. "The infrastructure created will eventually bridge and support evolving RFID solutions, further protecting existing investments."
