New embedded XP Vicon DVRs

October 2003 Surveillance

Having recently launched its range of Vicon Kollektor series DVR systems and the ViconNet software platform, digital surveillance systems has introduced its new range of embedded XP Vicon DVRs and ViconNet Software running on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

According to Gregory Veffer, technical manager at DSS, a true TCP/IP video network solution has arrived. Says Veffer, "Vicon has a unique advantage in that it is a complete video and audio solution for all CCTV requirements but with the open architecture unmatched by any other DVR system available."

"As the acceptance of digital video recording has become the norm and our customers, requirements have grown, there has definitely been a need for much more sophisticated and powerful network video management tools," he adds.

"Having studied the market since the introduction of DVR systems to South Africa about four years ago, Digital Surveillance Systems SA has striven to be the leaders in DVR technology by constantly keeping abreast of new developments around the world. This has allowed us to tailor exact solutions for customer requirements, whether it has been low-end entry-level four channel systems, mid-end 16 channel systems or high-end sophisticated network-based video and audio solutions," he says.

According to Veffer the problem in South Africa is that customers are basing their security requirements on price and not on expertise. He maintains that there could be a change in market tactics from distributors, who find it increasingly difficult to compete with the influx of cheap systems sold by 'dealers' who believe that a DVR is just a PC with a bigger hard drive.

Concludes Veffer, "As we have already witnessed a growing sales trend of the embedded type DVR that cannot be easily tampered with, the solutions being offered in PC-based DVR 'jumble sales' are quickly growing out of favour."
