Airport cuts ID badge printing workload

September 2003 Access Control & Identity Management

Jacksonville Airport in the United States is a major regional passenger air service provider, featuring non-stop service for over 5 million passengers a year to dozens of major US cities. Ensuring that employees were identified was a security practice at Jacksonville Airport long before new security regulations in the USA were put into effect.

"All employees of the airport are badged for access control and security purposes," reports Dale Edwards, operations supervisor in the Operation Department at Jacksonville Airport. "ID cards are used for access to parking lots and all restricted areas of the airport. We print approximately 3400 cards per year. We issue badges for new hires and re-issue cards for each and every employee on that employee's annual anniversary date."

Since security is paramount, an operation such as Jacksonville Airport cannot wait for ID cards. It needs cards printed on site and on demand. For years, the airport used a cut-and-paste laminate system.

"About four years ago, we switched to the Eltron printer and it cut our workload 75%," Edwards exclaims. "We are currently using the Eltron P310, as part of our Identicard system, to print employee information on the front of magnetic stripe cards. All employees in my department were easily trained to use it. The printer is reliable, economical, easy to care for and simple to use."

The standalone P310 prints sharp, readable bar codes, ID photos, graphics and text, edge-to-edge, in seconds. Its easy-to-load, low maintenance design makes it simple for anyone to operate. Green, yellow and red LED indicators provide easy-to-understand printer status. Printer ribbon synchronisation is automatic, eliminating the need for operator intervention. An easy to change, self-cleaning cartridge thoroughly removes dust before printing, minimising missing dots and colour registration problems.

"We will be migrating to a proximity system in the near future and want to use Eltron printers with it since they encode proximity cards as part of the printing process," Edwards adds.
