Carbon monoxide fire detector

August 2003 Fire & Safety

Carbon monoxide (CO), the toxic gas given off by fires, is an invisible killer. Exposure to the gas for less than a minute can result in brain damage and even death. Now a new fire detector from ADT Security's Fire Division can identify early CO emissions, alerting one to a potentially hazardous situation.

Specially developed by Tyco Safety Products, the ADT carbon monoxide (CO) fire detector detects CO before it reaches danger levels. It can even detect CO from the other side of a closed door, if it was, for example, installed inside a cupboard within the same room.

One of the most attractive features of the ADT CO fire detector is that one does not have to install an entire fire system, which can be very costly. This detector can be linked to an existing ADT alarm system, and should there be a fire, the ADT control room will be alerted, and the fire department notified.

As it is not affected by heat or steam, the ADT CO fire detector has a high resistance to false alarms. It is also not affected by dirt and dust, and is effective in all climatic conditions, says ADT Security group technical manager, Terry van Zyl.
