Wavetrend to focus on RFID market

June 2003 News & Events

Wavetrend Technologies has made the strategic decision to plough its full resources into active radio frequency identification (RFID), an industry that is widely tipped to have a dramatic impact on business.

This has led to the company handing over control of its access control suite System 42 (recently renamed Q Integrated Edition) to Ann Brookes, sales manager of Wavetrend who will be distributing it under the EMS (Evolving Management Solutions) umbrella.

"While we will continue to support and add value to Q IE, our focus is on the active RFID market where we have had considerable success both in SA and abroad and is a market that is set to accelerate," says Steve Mason, marketing director at Wavetrend.

Major active RFID successes for Wavetrend and its business partners include the protection of assets and tracking of staff and visitors to government institutions in SA and protecting valuable works of art at museums and art galleries in the UK and Scandinavia. It has also powered the RF platform for a bicycle tagging initiative in the Netherlands.

A further weapon in its RFID arsenal is that Wavetrend recently announced that it had become an IBM Advanced Business Partner. IBM is particularly interested in the TagTrac asset management solution which is designed to manage the IT assets of large enterprises anywhere in the world from a single location.

Brookes says that EMS's core expertise has always been the support and distribution of solutions to the African continent. She believes that the decision to separate this from Wavetrend's core active RFID business is a strategic move, which will improve the service delivery to the reseller channel. In addition to the Q IE access control product, HID and SAGEM distributorships, EMS will also focus on the active RFID solutions from Wavetrend.

"EMS will continue to supply the reseller channel with leading products and work closely in developing bespoke solutions in the security and logistics industry," concludes Brookes.
