Peritec offers multiple beam infrared perimeter protection

March/April 2000 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

In the security market today there is a demand for early warning perimeter devices to work in conjunction with existing installed security systems/monitoring rooms. Securing of attractively landscaped or environmentally sensitive areas calls for an intruder detection system which is discreet, highly effective and free from false alarms. According to Irenco's Marketing Manager Marihette Hattingh, Irenco's Peritec Multi-beam system has been specifically designed for perimeter protection of larger installations, such as factories, oil refineries, airports, mine complexes, military/prison establishments, large housing complexes etc.

Says Hattingh, "It is important to understand that when talking about multi-beam systems it is not an ex-stock item but a system that is designed and manufactured for each different application. Being custom made the system is adjustable to suit each end-user's specific needs."

A basic system will consist of a number of columns surrounding the premises with multiple infra-red beams forming a curtain in each zone. Columns can vary from 1 to 3 m tall. The beams will protect a standard range of 150 m. The columns provide for three ways of sight. This feature allows for columns on corners or bordering zones to share one pillar for two zones.

Suggested standard beam options available are:

* 4 beams per zone in a 1,5 m tall enclosure system.

* 5 beams per zone in a 2 m tall enclosure system.

* 6 beams per zone in a 2,5 m tall enclosure system.

A standard range of 150 m per zone will be protected at 90% attenuation. This means that 90% of the beam can be blocked by rain, dust storms, fog etc and the system will not cause false alarms under such conditions.

Beam synchronisation

Beam synchronisation is achieved by the synchronisation of transmitter and receiver pairs, i.e. individual transmitters will only respond to their own receivers thus allowing closer beam spacing and prevention of an additional transmitter being inserted by intruder to overcome the system.

Beam interruption

Beam interruption is programmable for the following conditions:

* Two adjacent beams blocked

* Individual beam alarm triggering

In both cases the interruption time is adjustable from 40 to 250 ms.

The complete system is housed in robust aluminium alloy extrusion, powered coated Satin black with lengths from 1 to 3 m available in steps of 0,5 m. The number of transmitters and receivers per column depends on the length of enclosure used.

Lightning protection

Each column is fitted with a lightning protection module which protects all input/output lines against lightning surges. The lightning protection modules was designed for the specific working of the multi-beam system and caters for industrial applications.

Heater modules will prevents moisture build-up. Each column is fitted with a heater module which is controlled by Thermostat which regulates heater on/off time. AC or DC powered heaters are available.

Other features

Sealed optics prevents dust and insects from causing false alarms while rugged lenses ensure a clearly defined focal point and thus improved signal sensing performance.

Each receiver fitted in column has an alarm output which is individually wired back to control room identifying zone/column and which beam within zone/column has been activated.

Alignment is easily achieved using a conventional voltmeter or by means of an audible signal alignment tool.

Each column is fitted with anti-tamper/anti-overclimb kit. This feature will activate the alarm when intruders try to step on top of the columns to jump over or attempt to remove the covers to tamper with the system.

The system must be powered by 12 V d.c. which makes it easy to install working with all existing alarm equipment. A UPS system is recommended to ensure working when power failures occur.

Concludes Hattingh, "All equipment is manufactured to IS9002 standards , backed by our full after sales service and 12 month warranty (defects in workmanship and materials) from original date of shipment.:"
