ASIS International administers certified protection professional (CPP) programme

May 2000 News & Events

For years the world has recognised a need for competent professionals who can effectively manage complex security issues that threaten people and the assets of corporations, governments and public and private institutions.

As the emphasis on protecting people, property and information increases, it has strengthened the demand for security professionals. To meet these needs, ASIS International administers the certified protection professional (CPP) programme.

Says Benedict Weaver MA (Oxon), ASIS Regional Vice President (RVP) for southern Africa and the Co-ordinator for the CPP Programme, "More than 8000 professionals have earned the designation of CPP. This group of professionals has demonstrated its competency in the areas of security solutions and best-business practices through an intensive qualification and testing programme. As a result, these men and women have been awarded the coveted designation of CPP and are recognised as proven leaders in their profession."

Adds Weaver, "I have recently run the fifth CPP course in Johannesburg and a selected group of candidates will be sitting the International Exam in May 2000."

Continuing professional education

The CPP designation sends a strong message of dedication to the security profession and commitment to continuing professional education. The certification process is one of the single most important steps you can make in career development.

Examination structure and content: the CPP examination is a 'generalist' test. It consists of multiple-choice questions covering the following areas:

* Emergency management.

* Investigations.

* Legal aspects (US or Canada).

* Personnel security.

* Physical security.

* Protection of sensitive information.

* Security management what does certification mean to you?

Says Weaver, "The CPP qualification demonstrates commitment to the profession, establishes professional credentials, prepares you for greater on-the-job responsibilities, improves career opportunities and advancement and offers greater professional recognition from peers.

"Of course, it also enhances the profession's image and reflects achievement," concludes Weaver.
