TETRA - TErrestrial trunked RAdio

May 2000 Access Control & Identity Management

TETRA stands for TErrestrial Trunked RAdio and is the only open digital trunked radio standard to meet the needs of the most demanding professional mobile radio users. TETRA is supported by the European Telecommunications Institute (ETSI) for Private Mobile Radio (PMR) and Public Access Mobile Radio (PAMR). Backed by the European Union, TETRA is further supported by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was established in December 1994 to create a forum to act on behalf of all interested parties, representing users, manufacturers, operators, test houses and telecom agencies. Motorola has taken responsible market leadership and is playing a key role in driving the establishment of the TETRA standard in the marketplace.

The uptake of TETRA to date has been from public safety organisations and PAMR operators as well as utility, transportation and industrial organisations proving the application flexibility and scope of TETRA.

Besides the many contracts in Europe, there have been a significant number of contracts to supply TETRA networks in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
