Affordable and licence-free multichannel two way radio now available

May 2000 Infrastructure

Following recent trends in many industrialised countries, the South African Telecommunications Authority (SATRA) has recently allocated a number of licence-free radio communication frequencies to the public. This public radio service (PRS) is for active use to anyone anywhere in South Africa.

Says Harold Marshall of Marshall International, now appointed wholesalers of Portocom radio and accessories, "With pre-approved frequencies and zero airtime charges, this fresh new concept represents a great contribution and service to the citizens of our country and the use of these channels is limited only by our imagination."

Claims Marshall, "The Portocom miniature radio meets high commercial international specifications, has ISO 9002 and with full SATRA approval, is the most economical PRS radio on the market. It has built-in, as standard features, hands-free VOX (voice operated transmit) capability, remote voice monitoring, selectable communications channels, sub-audible privacy tones, a drop-in charger to give 35 hours of continuous use before next charge, channel-scan, emergency call-alert, belt-clip, wrist strap, illuminated LCD display showing channel, transmit, low battery and signal strength indications.

"Being weather and impact resistant, makes the Portocom product, feature and quality wise, on par with our trading principals," he adds.

Says Marshall, "These powerful, super-portable two-way radios are great for indoor and outdoor communications and distances of up to 10 km are reached under the right conditions. Common to all radio communications, barriers such as buildings and land features can greatly reduce the range, very much like cellphone signals hitting a mast. The height of transmission and reception are directly proportional to the area of coverage. Average use on the ground will reach from 2-5 km.

"The equipment is a robust miniature handheld portable two-way radio currently available at only 30% of a standard portable two-way radio. With zero airtime or any other monthly or annual costs, besides the once off purchase price, PRS brings affordable communications to all South Africans in industry and for private use," he concludes.
