ADT Teach, an IT educational programme for township learners developed by ADT, has been honoured by receiving the Tyco Security Solutions (TSS) President’s Awards for 2011.
The ADT Teach team is one of only three teams throughout TSS’s operations globally that received this award.
The ADT Teach team developed the programme with the South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) in 2009. That year, ADT Teach Western Cape was started in three schools and in 2010, Johannesburg followed suit starting the programme in three schools too. The course is specifically designed for township learners with little or no experience with computers.
The ADT Teach vehicle; experienced IT tutors; laptops and teaching material arrives at the schools on allocated days in the week to brings IT skills directly to the learners. “The goal of the programme is to bring as many learners as possible from a beginner to intermediate/advanced level of computer literacy at the end of three years, enabling ADT and other IT companies to offer more careers to this segment of the population,” says Roy Rawlins, MDof ADT Central Region.
Basic IT skills are vital for anyone entering the job market and many learners from disadvantaged schools in our country leave school with no formal IT training. A lack of infrastructure and support means that many schools do not have the necessary equipment or teachers to offer IT skills to learners.
“The programme has been highly successful in both the Western Cape and Johannesburg achieving an almost 100% pass rate with its students. We are exceptionally proud of this achievement,” says Rawlins.
