At the 2011 iLegal conference, due to be held on 25 October, one of the topics of focus will be dealing with syndicates.
Apart from case studies showing how syndicate operations on mines have been tackled – successfully – the conference will also host Johan Olivier who will be presenting on a systematic approach to dealing with syndicates and theft in high-value industries.
Olivier joined the South African Police after Matric, completing his training as a forensic investigator. After service in South African Criminal Bureau and subsequently Fingerprint Office, he was promoted to Warrant Officer. He spent a brief period in banking, and subsequently joined Anglo American Mining security, specifically at ERGO (East Rand Gold and Uranium Coy) where he spent 12 years. While there, he was promoted to chief security superintendent, responsible for all security aspects of the ERGO operations on the East Rand. During this time he also completed the management course in security as well as the management course in civil defence through UNISA.
In 1995, he was appointed at Rand Refinery as the in-house, chief security superintendent, and in November 1997 he took up the position of manager protection services at Impala Platinum Refineries in Springs. Subsequently he was appointed as group protection services manager, responsible for the security function at Impala Rustenburg Mines, mineral processing in Rustenburg as well as mining operations in Steelpoort. He is also currently chairman of the International Platinum Association – Mining.
