Network video in finance

August 2011 Infrastructure, Surveillance, Financial (Industry)

Security threats facing financial institutions are an ongoing challenge and although there are often financial implications associated with taking on the latest technology solutions. However, what if you could use your existing CCTV equipment and network infrastructure to create a modern, state-of-the-art surveillance system that could monitor activities at any number of branch offices from a central location – and visually verify alarms to security staff?

Solutions installed in local bank branches can transmit images to a central location for remote viewing using the LAN or Internet, which is convenient for any organisation with geographically dispersed local branches.

The reliability of network video reduces the risk that thieves will get away with their crimes, including internal crime such as employee fraud. High image quality leads to easy identification of people and a clear view of transactions at ATM machines, deposit boxes and at the cashier in the branch office. Having the knowledge that all interactions are observed is both a deterrent to a would-be criminal, and it offers bank personnel peace of mind.

Network cameras with motion detection can be used to send images by e-mail or MMS to security personnel or the police if a break-in should occur. This eliminates the time and effort wasted in responding to false alarms and enables decisions to be based on accurate, up-to-the minute information. In addition to improving safety, video images are used to evaluate peak hours of activity at each bank branch leading to better use of tellers through optimum scheduling.

Axis surveillance solutions have been installed in banks and financial institutions in several major European countries, in the US and in Asia. In France for example, the Caisse d’Epargne banking group needed to cost-effectively extend the benefits of surveillance monitoring into 70 regional branch offices throughout France. Axis network cameras were installed directly onto the existing networks within each regional bank. With digital images that can be posted into e-mail and many other security applications over the network.

Locally, Liberty Life invested in securing its new KwaZulu-Natal regional headquarters in Umhlanga Ridge, north of Durban. Liberty Properties’ stringent security and building management system criteria necessitated the installation of a sophisticated, effective surveillance solution.

Various Axis network cameras were installed in strategic locations to maximise the efficiency of the system. ML Technologies was instrumental in designing a surveillance solution, using Axis network video products, as well as the Honeywell EBI solution that meets the security standards set by Liberty Properties.
