A 2008 Volvo FH12 440 truck, with two interlinked trailers and a consignment of copper worth R3 million was hijacked in Vereeniging at approximately 7 pm on 7 April.
Chris Rudd, of Ivan Stols Vervoer called the Cartrack control room at 01:32 am to report the truck had been hijacked. At 1:42 am, a ground team and helicopter was dispatched. Danie Day Insurance Assessors, who work closely with Cartrack, dispatched an insurance assessor and investigator.
The Cartrack recovery team and the Danie Day investigators chased the truck. The truck attempted to push the recovery vehicle off the road, but was unsuccessful. The recovery vehicle slowed down and moved behind the truck to avoid being pushed off the road. Shots were fired at the recovery team with automatic weapons. The recovery team stayed out of range of the hail of bullets.
The Witbank SAP sent a couple of teams to assist in the recovery. Ogies SAP had vehicles waiting on the N12 at the Ogies offramp. The Ogies SAP were unable to stop the suspects with the blockade. The Witbank SAP and Cartrack gave chase, and shots were exchanged between the SAP and the suspects. The Witbank SAP and Cartrack pulled the truck over. Two Zimbabwean suspects were arrested. The suspects have been detained at the Ogies Police Station.
