Market must pay more attention to skills development

March 2011 News & Events

While technology is considered critical to any business, sustainability cannot be achieved nor profit generated without the development of people.

Teryl Schroenn, CEO at Accsys, points to recent recruitment statistics that show a reduction in the amount of employed people in the second half of last year. There has also been a decline in companies that are proactively engaging the market in order to increase their headcount.

“The fact is that more needs to be done to achieve balance between skilled individuals and available positions, unskilled job seekers and training or skills development initiatives. Our position as people management specialists is to equip job seekers with the knowledge they require to be able to secure positions and, at the same time, provide companies with people that will add immediate value and will prove to be assets within the business as they learn and grow into roles,” says Schroenn.

Accsys has established and developed a recruitment division, called Accsys PeoplePlace, which is positioned to address the disparity between education delivery channels, learners, companies and the recruitment position.

This service is managed by human resource experts who facilitate interaction between job seekers and prospective employers. These experienced personnel continue to keep a close eye on developments in the market and take cognisance of sought-after skills, available positions and growth areas.

“We have noted that more applicants are showing interest in information technology and its application within various industries. As developers of solutions designed to enhance human resource development, payroll administration, time and attendance, as well as access control, we are positioned to lead from the front within skills development and recruitment,” adds Schroenn. “Our advice to clients is to continue to upskill employees – trained employees are more motivated and when the market gains momentum the workforce is better able to take advantage of new opportunities.”

The company has also partnered with a number of tertiary institutions which has resulted in a long-standing internship program. This program provides learners with an opportunity to gain on-the-job experience at Accsys and benefit from exposure to several key areas of commerce.

“This is an ongoing initiative that continues to add value and empower South Africa’s future entrepreneurs. Again, this is our contribution to helping to address urgent needs such as skills and employment opportunity in the market. Experiential training and practical experience within a corporate environment is a credible, cost-effective avenue of skills transfer and application,” Schroenn continues.

Schroenn believes that if companies, employees, recruiters, trainers and other role players focus more attention on communication and interaction, more will be achieved in terms of balancing the market and creating opportunity during difficult economic times.
