Low-fire hazard conduit prevents fires in mines

January 2010 Fire & Safety

Elquip Solutions, a provider of electrical, automation, mechanical and consumable products, is the local distributor of UK conduit manufacturer Flexicon’s low-fire hazard flexible (LFH) nylon conduits, which are particularly useful in mining applications where fires or explosions are always a risk factor.

LFH conduit systems are an important part of the specifications in many cabling applications, used in the mining industry and in many other industries. This is according to Brian Mostert, MD of Elquip Solutions.

“LFH systems are required to protect personnel and property in the event of explosion or fire,” he points out. “The LFH nylon conduit has a high-flame retardancy in order to prevent a fire, or limit its development and has low smoke emission in the event of a fire,” he adds, pointing out that the conduit furthermore has low toxicity and is halogen-free, meaning that dangerous halogen acid gas emission is also reduced in the event of fire.

He also explains that the company has utmost faith in the quality of Flexicon’s products for all applications, owing to the stringent tests that Flexicon conducts on the entire product range.

“In the case of our LFH conduits, these tests include exposing the conduits to flames, toxic fumes and smoke. What is especially impressive is that these conduits are self-extinguishing, preventing a fire from spreading,” remarks Chris Poulton, export sales manager, Flexicon UK, visiting Elquip Solutions and their conduit customers in South Africa recently.

“In summary, Flexicon’s LFH conduits and other products are not only innovative, but very user-friendly, as they have been designed to make installation simple and quick. The products are tamper-proof, and can be taken apart easily,” Mostert concludes.
