Unique security system expected to spearhead assault on world markets

September 2001 Access Control & Identity Management

Since the rollout of its first card reader in 1981, Cardax has been inventing high-tech solutions for access control and security. Today, the company is a respected international player with offices in the US, UK, South Africa, Australia and Thailand as well as New Zealand. Its reach extends beyond even these destinations.

For example, Cardax users include Beijing Airport; the Central Bank of Turkey; and Reliance Industries in India. In New Zealand Cardax electronic security systems are used in over 700 Telecom sites - all linked.

General Manager Sales & Marketing for Cardax, Graham Dawson, says the company aims to meet the security needs of modern business - from single sites to fully integrated enterprise systems. "Smaller users can be confident they have the same access to our world-beating levels of technology that the big multinationals do," says Dawson.

"Larger clients with complex, multisite security requirements can be equally confident we can offer superior command, control and monitoring systems." He adds that typical users range from the finance, communications, transport and health sectors to manufacturers, universities, government departments and industry.

The extent of the company's reach within these sectors is demonstrated by one of its clients, the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, which has 52 000 cardholders using Cardax technology on a regular basis.

Windows-based security system

Typical of the enterprise and innovation shown by Cardax is the recent launch of its ground-breaking CardaxFT access control system - a unique, Microsoft Windows 2000-based security system which integrates access control and alarms management, intruder alarm monitoring, remote digital imaging, intercom and photo identification.

More importantly, says Dawson, it is the only access control system that does not need to be integrated with other systems.

"The FT system is Internet-compatible and OPC-enabled, and it utilises existing Intranets and WANs (wide area networks)," he adds. "As with all our systems, it is scalable and can be tailored to meet the needs of large and small organisations." At the top end of the scale it is capable of supporting 900 000 cardholders and 4000 access-controlled doors.

World firsts

The CardaxFT system includes a command centre, controllers, intelligent door terminals with intercom, digital cameras, a range of input and output devices and reader interfaces. Future upgrades of the system are easily accommodated as the CardaxFT Controller supports downloadable code from the command centre. Controllers also support remote dial-up operation, enabling cost-effective monitoring of remote locations within the system.

The system's devices include some world firsts such as the total integration of a digital signal processor image camera. This camera, which has been designed with network environments in mind, performs motion detection, activity reporting, image compression and image security. Compression ensures the overall impact on a network is minimised.

Dawson expects the FT system to spearhead Cardax's assault on world markets. "Our FT product has been recognised by our competitors for what it is - a unique, world-class system."
