Customised security solution for Nigerian Bank

June 2001 Infrastructure

Philips Communication Security and Imaging (CSI) is currently completing an installation for the Central Bank of Nigeria. The installation includes Philips CCTV, PA and Conference systems.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, based in Nigeria's capital city Abuja, serves as a bank, offers financial services and is the principal administrator of foreign exchange regulations for Nigeria. The importance of first class security and effective communication systems is therefore vital.

To meet the demand for a comprehensive public address distribution system, Philips has installed the SM40 public address and sound distribution system. The bank has been divided in to 64 different zones and comprises 1100 speakers, the majority of which are ceiling mounted. The zoning of the sound distribution allows announcements to be targeted to groups of people, while at the same time supplying background music. The music can be interrupted at any time for announcements in any specific zone or group of zones. The SM40 is also linked to the evacuation system and is coupled to the fire alarm system.

In addition, the SM40 incorporates a surveillance system that is designed to monitor the status of the amplifiers, loudspeakers and cables thus ensuring the system is in peak working order. Should any faults occur, the system pinpoints them, thereby saving time, minimising repair costs and ensuring that the system is fully functional at all times.

Effective communication

The bank also houses a conference auditorium with seating provided for over 500 delegates. In order to effect clear communication from delegates as well as provide them with language distribution options, the Philips Concentus DCN System has been installed.

The Concentus provides integrated digital conference management that not only gives delegates facilities for speaking and listening but also provides comprehensive facilities for generating and distributing simultaneous interpretations to conference participants. The interpreted languages are distributed through the system cable - therefore no extra connection is required and an infrared transmission system can be connected to enable wireless distribution of languages. While the Concentus can provide for up to 30 simultaneous language channels, the Central Bank of Nigeria has requested only four.

Another feature of the Philips Concentus particularly attractive to the Central Bank of Nigeria was the camera control feature. This feature allows for an image to be displayed on TVs, projection screens or anywhere else in the area that is required. In addition, this feature is automatic, therefore no technician or skilled operator is required.

Surveillance

The third phase of the Central Bank of Nigeria project is the installation of the CCTV system. This all-encompassing system includes 80 cameras both internally and externally as well as the new Philips Autodome for larger internal areas. For the recording and playback of movement within specified areas, Philips has installed a digital video recorder (DVR) which records video images digitally to the internal hard drive. Pictures are recorded using advanced compression technology to maintain high quality colour or black and white images.

The recorded images are stored on the unit's hard drive and because they are digitally recorded, the image remains of the same high quality regardless of how many times a recording is made or re-recorded.

In addition to the installation for the Central Bank of Nigeria, Philips CSI has been involved in installations in other African countries including the Uganda Airport, the World Health Organisation based in Zimbabwe and the United Nations offices in Ivory Coast.
