BSS - provider of Brilliant Security Solutions

March/April 2001 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

Rarely does there come a company that is able to offer high-tech security solutions from design through to implementation. Brilliant Security Solutions (BSS), a member of the CSIR Group is one such company, which as a result of its sophisticated products has won both local and international acclaim in the electronic security arena.

Brilliant Security Solutions (BSS) is one of the first five companies that were formed in 1999 as part of the CSIR group of companies. The company began operating in April of that year after being a shadow company within the CSIR since 1997.

BSS came into being initially focusing on the rural security market with the mainstay of products developed within the CSIR for South African needs and applications. This quickly extended into the turnkey security market and other electronic system markets such as telcom and defence electronics. Today, BSS has three areas of focus aimed at maximising technologies in specific niche markets.

BSS' primary focus is to service the local security market from in-house developed products through to major turnkey solutions to industry including installation, maintenance and support. The company's secondary focus is telecommunication solutions with specific focus on providing total installation with bought-in products, whilst its tertiary focus is military electronic systems, from design to implementation.

As a result, BSS is able to offer consultation and complete solutions in various aspects of security including access control, CCTV systems and integration and vehicle tracking and perimeter security. The company is also involved in the design and development of perimeter sensor equipment as well as software development.

The company's list of clientele is impressive with names such as AngloGold, Mossgas and the South African Police Services. Whilst there is no doubt that BSS offers its clients highly sophisticated security solutions, the people who make up the company also lend themselves to its success. The company is made up of a team of qualified staff, all of whom have extensive high technology knowledge, under the leadership of Managing Director Giep Vermeulen. Vermeulen has some 18 years project management experience, both in defence and commercial related projects locally and internationally, plus another 10 years as Business Development Manager.

Superbeam

Furthermore, because the company designs and manufactures its own products, it is able to offer competitive prices for high-tech security products, which are ISO 9001 compliant. The company's strong R&D links and expertise especially with regards to perimeter security makes it well-positioned to enjoy considerable growth in the security industry.

As mentioned earlier, BSS initially focused on the rural security market. It was with this in mind that the company developed the Home Information Security System (HISS). Known simply as Superbeam, the product is a sophisticated perimeter security solution that offers advanced information and early warning in order to prevent being attacked by an intruder.

Superbeam is a spin-off of the CSIR's defence programme, and has been adapted from a technique developed in the 1980s to provide perimeter security for strategic military and civilian facilities both locally and internationally.

The system consists of an intricate network of active infrared beams installed unobtrusively in one's house and property. Superbeam operates on the principle of movement detection. Once installed the user will have two detection zones outside and one inside the house to give him early warning of any movement, with the intruder unaware of it. What is more, even if an intruder does know about Superbeam, he will not be able to figure out how it works and when someone penetrates the boundaries, the sensors immediately activate the system and communicate the movement to the user who can then decide if he wants to react to the warning. Furthermore, Superbeam can communicate early warnings through any available communication system.

According to Vermeulen, the system can be activated from a distance with a remote controlled unit from up to 400 m away from the property. As soon as one is within the prescribed distance, one simply presses a button on the remote control that immediately relays any information about the security status to a palmtop screen. In addition, Superbeam can be integrated into any other security system already in use and can be upgraded when new technology becomes available.

It can also be programmed to switch lights on and off when nobody is home and should electrical power be interrupted, several stand-by power systems ensure that Superbeam will continue to operate for a few days, thereby ensuring that this highly sophisticated system offers more value than traditional alarm systems.

In a nutshell, Superbeam epitomises what Brilliant Security Solutions stands for, a high-tech technology company, which has the necessary expertise and vision to provide high- tech electronic security solutions at a reasonable price.
