Enhancing control room operations

SMART Surveillance & AI 2026 Security Services & Risk Management, Surveillance

Jenny Reid.

As South Africa faces complex and more advanced security challenges, the demand for advanced surveillance solutions, including CCTV and security control rooms, continues to surge. With the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into these systems, security operations have become more efficient and data-driven. However, the success of these enhancements depends significantly on the personnel operating them.

As either a consumer of security services or a provider, we need to explore the crucial role that employee screening plays in hiring and retaining skilled security control room personnel, particularly amid evolving technological capabilities.

Traditionally, security control room personnel focused on monitoring live CCTV feeds, responding to incidents, and ensuring overall safety. With AI capabilities now complementing these operations, personnel could be expected to interpret data analytics, manage automated alerts, and make strategic decisions based on real-time intelligence. This evolution necessitates a higher level of expertise and adaptability, making rigorous employee screening an imperative component of the hiring and employment process.

Robust pre-employment screening is essential to hiring capable and trustworthy security personnel or promoting staff into such a position. Below are vital components of the screening process:

• Background checks

• Criminal history verification: Conduct thorough background checks to ensure candidates do not have a criminal record, as this is essential for PSIRA.

• Credit checks: Sadly, the Credit Act does not allow you to check candidates’ financial responsibility, where financial distress may increase vulnerability to corruption.

• Identity verification

• Personal identification checks: Confirm the authenticity of identification documents to prevent identity fraud and ensure legal eligibility for employment.

• Skills assessment

• Technical proficiency: Evaluate technical abilities in operating CCTV systems and understanding AI analytics.

• Problem-solving and decision-making: Use situational judgment tests to assess candidates’ abilities to make informed decisions quickly.

• Psychometric testing

• Assess personality traits such as vigilance, stress tolerance, and ethical integrity, which are crucial for high-pressure decision-making roles.

Ensuring continuous improvement

Maintaining high standards does not stop at the hiring stage; continuous screening and professional development are equally important.

Regular performance reviews: Conduct regular assessments of personnel’s adherence to company protocols, efficiency in handling incidents, and ability to leverage AI data effectively. For this, an on-site test case scenario would be recommended.

Security clearance updates: Periodically re-evaluate employees’ security clearances, especially if they handle sensitive information or have access to critical infrastructure.

Training and upskilling: Provide ongoing education on advancements in surveillance technology and AI integration to ensure personnel remain at the forefront of security innovation. Moreover, conduct regular drills to prepare staff for emergencies, improving readiness and response times.

AI’s role in security operations is transformative, yet it introduces ethical considerations that highlight the importance of thorough screening processes. The precision and scope of AI demand that personnel manage data responsibly, respecting privacy and adhering to legal standards. Employers must ensure employees understand these ethical considerations and hold them accountable through ongoing evaluations and ethical training. It is for this reason that the integrity test should be a critical element within your screening programme.

Investing in comprehensive employee screening and sharing this information with your clients gives security firms a competitive advantage.

1. Enhanced trustworthiness: Clients have greater confidence in security services, knowing that personnel are thoroughly vetted and competent and ethical.

2. Operational efficiency: Well-screened and trained personnel are more adept at using AI tools, leading to faster incident response and more efficient security management.

3. Reduced liability: Thorough screening mitigates risks associated with employee misconduct or negligence, safeguarding firms against potential legal challenges.

As South Africa continues to leverage AI to enhance security operations, the role of skilled, trustworthy personnel becomes even more critical. By implementing comprehensive employee screening, security firms can ensure that their control room operations are staffed by individuals who are not only technically proficient, but also ethically aligned with organisational goals.

The integration of AI presents exciting opportunities, but the human element ultimately determines the success of security operations. By prioritising rigorous screening processes, continuous training, and ethical accountability, South Africa’s security sector can build resilient, effective, and responsible security control room teams for the future.
